I’d missed this when it first came out, but I caught it when my girls and nieces wanted to rewatch it recently at a sleepover and absolutely adored it.
It’s visually stunning, Emma Thompson and Lashonna Lynch are fantastic, and Alisha Weir is an absolute star-in-the-making.
📺 The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar
I know I KNOW. All these recs have huge spon-con vibes given that they are Netflix. Can confirm, Netflix is NOT a sponsor of this newsletter (but I would love if they were).
That said, I was a little leery of Henry Sugar given my mileage varying with Wes Anderson, but this was a perfect dose of craft and whimsy. I find that I can’t watch Wes Anderson at home because I’m much more prone to distraction, where as in the theater, I’m locked and loaded with whatever is happening.
But with this mini-movie clocking in at 39ish minutes, I felt like it was a perfect length and the story and format complimented the run-time perfectly.
✍️ The Mini-Essay ✍️
This past weekend, SNL returned to our Saturday evening programming schedule, and can I be honest with you right now? I really, really missed it.1
I grew up watching SNL reruns (on VH1, I think?), and I, like many other males my age, memorized all the Chris Farley bits and will argue to this day that Phil Hartman was the most indispensable cast member ever and that Norm McDonald is the most underrated Weekend Update host ever.
Truly, SNL has been one of the main cultural touchstones of my life since I can remember. So much so that the music of SNL is probably a top three formative sound of my life.
